In the last five years, several Post Natal Depression organisations in Queensland have ceased to provide services. Current resources for mums in need are scarce and expensive, and for dads almost non-existent.
In 2005, FPCQ formed a subcommittee to undertake the Post Natal Depression Support Groups project.
Advertisements for volunteers brought many interested women, some of whom have experienced PND themselves, to the FPCQ training room where they were trained in PND, counselling microskills and how to facilitate a support group.
The first PND Support Group was held in Grange, Brisbane, and was active for three years thanks to the efforts, commitment and warmth of the volunteers and subcommittee.
The group moved to Wooloongabba where they met twice a month on a Monday from 10:30am until 12:00pm. The hour and a half included a half hour presentation on a topic relevant to the women as well as time for them to talk together. Cost to attend is a voluntary gold coin donation. Every effort is made to make the mums feel comfortable and welcome.
At present the FPCQ Post Natal Depression Support groups are undergoing changes and hence, Grange and Wooloongabba groups are not currently in operation. However, in the meantime, you will find here a list of contactable counsellors for PND support.
There is a tremendous need for PND Support Groups to be established in other areas around Brisbane and Queensland.
FPCQ continues to apply for funding to expand the PND Support Groups project throughout Queensland.
If you have experience in funding and would like to offer your assistance please contact FPCQ.
